When using foundation in your frames, slight sideways tilts will have no consequence. But if you’re going foundationless, great care needs to be taken to make sure the hive stack is dead level from side to side. Without the discipline of foundation, the bees will use their internal plumb bobs.

Foundation or Foundationless Beekeeping? - PerfectBee

May 18, 2019  Foundationless Frames. Foundationless frames allow bees to build comb any way they like. Bees have the freedom to build the size cells they need and are not exposed to the chemicals commonly associated with wax coated foundation. But with this "bee freedom" comes challenges for the beekeeper, in the form of cross comb.

Dec 16, 2015  Per my suggestion, we removed the foundation from these frames and found that the bees began to happily draw out comb. So my experience is that foundation can actually hinder hive growth in new colonies. You cannot extract with foundationless frames. This is just not true. I have extracted with foundationless deep frames!

Mixing foundation and drawn comb in supers

Apr 15, 2014  Re: Mixing foundation and drawn comb in supers. If you have a good strong flow most anything seems to work, except when it doesn't and they make you a huge mess. Shave your frames to 1 1/4" and draw 11 at a time until they are mostly drawn. If you can rotate the outermost frames in to the middle it will help.

3 Reasons To Go Foundationless In Your Langstroth Beehive

Apr 16, 2017  It’s going on 5 years now that I’ve been using foundationless frames in my Langstroth hives, and I’ve come to swear by the method. Mainstream beekeeping dictates the use of foundation in hive frames to provide a structure for the bees to build their combs upon. However, I’ve found 3 reasons to contradict that way of thinking.

Jul 01, 2010  Foundationless beekeeping is considered “radical” by some, but top-bar hive (TBH) beekeepers have been doing it for years. The idea is simple. Instead of providing pre-formed and stamped commercial foundation to your bees—you allow them to build their own. There are some real advantages to going foundationless. The most popular reason is that commercial foundation []
